Marietta College has opened the Center for Appalachian Innovation, a new hub to boost economic growth, practical research, and community collaboration across Appalachian Ohio. The college announced the launch on Nov. 10 at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center, with government, business, and higher education leaders in attendance. The event was open to the public.
According to Marietta College, the Center is funded through the State of Ohio’s Priority Projects Line Item, with $750,000 in annual support over the next two years. Built as a home base for research, policy work, and partnerships, the Center is designed to tackle long-standing regional challenges while helping local governments and small businesses find workable, homegrown solutions.
Its work will follow three pillars:
- Research: Faculty and students will team up with local governments and industry to study regional problems and deliver data-driven answers.
- Convene: The Center will bring together leaders from business, government, and community groups for symposia and working sessions that surface shared solutions.
- Support: It will provide capacity-building help to local governments and small businesses, including planning support, grant navigation, and operational improvements.
“Appalachian Ohio has a rich history and tremendous potential,” said Dr. Kathleen Dougherty, President of Marietta College. “This Center is about embracing who we are as a region and working together to help Appalachian communities thrive. By uniting Marietta College’s academic strengths with regional leadership and innovation-oriented stakeholders, we aim to serve as a catalyst for economic and community revitalization in Marietta and Appalachian Ohio.”
The college said the Monday event began at 2:30 p.m. at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center, with a reception following the program. Speakers included President Dougherty, State Senator Brian Chavez, State Representative Kevin Ritter, Washington County Commissioner Charlie Schilling, and local business leader Jim Vuksic.
College officials added that the Center strengthens Marietta College’s long-term commitment to Appalachian Ohio’s economic, educational, and civic life. By linking campus expertise with community priorities, the initiative aims to turn solid ideas into action and open new paths for towns across the region.
